The Nature of FAVE

What is FAVE?

FAVE is a collection of python scripts that communicate with other pieces of software to produce forced alignments and to automate Bayesian formant tracking.

  • Python 2.x runs the script
    • the numpy module does some math
  • HTK for forced alignment
    • HMM Tool Kit
      • Hidden Markov Model
  • Praat does the Acoustic Analysis
  • SoX an optional program to slice and dice the audio

Why is installing FAVE such a pain?

  • Increasingly, your major platforms are moving away from providing default support for scientific computing.
    • Mac: Xcode + commandline tools and XQaurtz are necessary pre-requisites
  • There‚Äôs a bug in the HTK code
  • FAVE is a command line tool
